About Us

On December 9, 2010 the Maryland People's Law Library web site went live with a new redesign that features expanded, updated and easy-to-find information about legal issues that are on people’s minds, issues such as housing and family law.

Maryland's Peoples Law Library (PLL) is a legal information and self-help website maintained by the Maryland State Law Library, a court-related agency of the Maryland Judiciary, and supported by Maryland's non-profit legal services providers. Various sections of this site have been developed by different legal aid programs, public interest attorneys, other community advocacy groups and the Maryland Legal Assistance Network (MLAN). This award-winning website uses established standards of excellence and a Content Advisory Committee of legal professionals consults on the development of its content.

This site provides information on Maryland and Federal law affecting low- and moderate-income Marylanders and their families. The public can find help using this site at outreach centers and law libraries throughout the state.

We do not accept advertisements and strive to provide unbiased legal information on the topics that pro se litigants face in the Maeryland courts. Note that this site is geared specifically for Maryland's citizens. If you need legal information or legal assistance outside of Maryland, this resource page or your local law library may be helpful. The People's Law Library staff cannot give users legal advice - users wishing to have the law applied to their situation should consult an attorney. This site is not an attorney advertisement or an e-mail legal advice service.

Through 2007, PLL had been a project of the Maryland Legal Assistance Network (MLAN), which was initially created by a 3-year grant from the Open Society Institute to the Maryland Legal Services Corporation (a nonprofit organization that funds legal aid providers offering free legal help to low- and moderate-income people in Maryland). This website served as a collaborative effort (managed by MLAN) of the Maryland non-profit legal services providers with the goal of providing a single "portal" to Maryland legal and self-help information. The Legal Aid Bureau was a major partner in the development and maintenance of this website. With funding from the Legal Services Corporation, Legal Aid contributed the platform and navigation scheme for this site. In November 2007, the Maryland State Law Library assumed responsibility for the management and continued updating of this site.
